It served varied purposes: House of God, burial place to princes, university banquet hall and safekeeping place for the Bibliotheca Palatina. The books were kept in planned galleries, which explains the wide aisles and relatively narrow form of the nave. <br>  In the 30 year war, the church was booty from Tilly and was a gift to the Pope in 1623.
